How does Shakespeare make Act 2 Scene 5 of Twelfth Night Dramatic Essay Act 2 Scene 5 of Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare is the scene in which Maria, Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Fabian lay the foundation of their revenge by leaving a letter for Malvolio supposedly written by Olivia saying that she loves him. The scene is made dramatic in various ways. First of all, prior to Act 2 Scene 5, the audience already dislike Malvolio. This is because he feels he can talk down to Sir Toby who is socially his superior: my masters are you mad? Or what are you? Have you no wit, manners, nor honesty, but to gable like tinkers at this time of night? This makes the audience dislike Malvolio because he thinks he has more right to have control over Sir Toby. We know that Sir Toby does not like Malvolio speaking down to him because he gets angry and reminds Malvolio of his position: out o tune Sir, ye lie, art any more than a steward? This adds to the drama of Act 2 Scene 5 because by the end of the previous scene the audience are already looking forward to seeing Toby, Andrew, Fabian and Maria get revenge on Malvolio. Another point is, in Act 2 scene 5, the audience discover more about Malvolios character when he is in the garden talking to himself. He is revealing his true character because he thinks he is alone. We discover that in reality he is quite vein and thinks he has more importance that he does: he has been yonder I the sun practising behaviour to his own shadow. He jumps to conclusions when he finds the letter and automatically assumes it is for him: M, Malvolio; M why, that begins my name! Then he says: To be count Malvolio already putting himself into a higher position. This makes the audience think he is arrogant and they cannot wait to see him humiliated. In addition, the stage arrangement also adds to the drama and suspense of this scene. Malvolio is at the front of the stage, thinking he is alone, but secretly Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Fabian are hiding behind a bush in the garden. This adds to the tension because the audience know the other characters are there and can hear everything. Malvolio starts to pretend to order Toby around: you must amend your drunkenness. This makes Sir Toby angry and he starts to speak out loud: shall this fellow live? This builds suspense as the audience wonder if he is going to blow his cover and spoil the plot. As he gets more angry he speaks louder and louder and the audience get more and more tense as they wonder what will happen. This keeps them interested and involved. Further more, dramatic Irony also contributes to the drama of Act 2 Scene 5 because the audience know that Malvolio is being tricked and therefore feel they are part of the plot to humiliate him. They enjoy watching this happen because they dislike him and so enjoy watching him build up false hope when really none of what he believes is true. They are looking forward to seeing what is going to happen because they know he is going to make a fool of himself and therefore they feel more involved because they know something Malvolio does not. Moreover, Shakespeares language plays an important part in the play because it reminds us of the theme of the scene. Malvolio begins to use Thou when referring to Olivia, making him seem more important and of higher authority as he already feels equal to her. The audience dont like this because they already know he is full of self importance and arrogant. They react by becoming more eager for him to be humiliated. Shakespeare also uses hunting imagery and insults and to remind the audience that Malvolio is going to be caught: Here comes the trout, that must be caught with tickling. This suggests that Malvolio is being compared to an animal and is being hunted down. Throughout the poem Wordsworth refers back to the daffodils and makes a connection with other things like them such as stars. Wordsworth also depicts how the daffodils dance. In the last verse the reader finally finds out that the poem is a recollection. Whilst the second of the two poems, Miracle on St. Davids Day written by Gillian Clarke is about a mentally ill patient reciting Wordsworths Daffodils in front of a crowd of other patients and daffodils. From the title Miracle on St. Davids Day it is revealed to the reader what this poem is about. It is obvious that a miracle is the main point of the poem, meaning something holy yet unexpected. The poem starts off in a very positive setting among the cedars and enormous oaks but by the second verse the reader finds out that Clarke is, in reality, describing an Insane Asylum. The poet describes herself reading poetry to the insane as she does a huge and mild man recites Wordsworths Daffodils with no emotion the memory of the poem is perfect but the sound isnt because he hadnt spoken in a long time. He recites the poem in front of the other patients and ten thousand daffodils outside. Both these poems have the theme of memory and daffodils but each are represented in a different way. In the first line of Daffodils Wordsworth describes himself as a cloud, wandering lonely. The verb and adverb tell us that the cloud isnt moving very fast and that the cloud is a distance from everything else. This is also personification because the cloud could also be a person outcast by society, for example Wordsworth could be trying to describe his own experience. In the second line of the verse the poet uses another slow verb floats. Half way through the verse there is a change of pace all at once and the reader then sees the crowd of daffodils. Additionally the poet using two adjectives to describe the numbers of daffodils host and crowd showing that there must have been at least one hundred. This could also mean that the person being described as a cloud being accepted back into society. Wordsworth describes the daffodils as golden with illustrates the radiant colour and wealth of the memory. In the last line of the first verse Wordsworth uses personification to give the daffodils human characteristics when he uses the verbs Fluttering and dancing which are also metaphors. The verb dancing also gives the sense that the daffodils were dancing all together in rhythm. In the first verse and throughout the poem the poet uses rhyming couplets at the end of each line. Wordsworth also uses the rhyme scheme of ABABCC in each verse. Wordsworth in the second verse talks about stars and how many there were and makes a connection between them and the daffodils. The poet describes the stars, as continuous showing the reader that there are countless numbers of them. In the second line the writer uses the adjective and verb twinkle to describe the stars; there is also a connection between twinkle and golden because stars are also golden. The poet carries on to say, they stretched in a never-ending line which supports the other quotes. Most of the second verse goes on about how many stars there actually are. In the fourth line the poet says Ten thousand saw I at a glance which shows he wasnt paying attention to how many there were it also gives us the impression that the stars saw him. Wordsworth makes another connection between the daffodils and the stars because they both dance. He uses the verb tossing and the adverb sprightly to describe the way they danced. Wordsworth connects the daffodils and the stars by telling us that they both danced. Wordsworth, throughout the poem, has repeated the dancing, the daffodils and the fact that in every verse there is a mentioning of water, in the first verse it was lake in the second bay and finally in the third waves. And again in the first line of the third verse the poet repeats the fact that he saw something dance. He says the waves beside them danced, but . The mood then changes with the use of the word but, because it makes the reader expect something. After all the describing of the magical and romantic atmosphere, the reader feels pessimistic that something is going to change the whole mood of the poem. The reader then discovers that nothing terrible happens but the but was only to shame the waves, as the daffodils were more effective out-did the sparkling waves in glee. This means that the daffodils were better than waves. The atmosphere is now light and fantastic again, glee meaning merriment and cheerfulness. There is a colon in the middle of verse three indicating a pause, which continues with Wordsworth commenting on his feelings and actions. I gazed- and gazed- but little thought. The dashes slow the line down by breaking it up gradually. By doing this Wordsworth indicates the end of the description of the daffodils. There is also a metaphor in this verse, what wealth to me the show had brought. The wealth in this verse is a metaphor describing the memory, experience and emotion of seeing the daffodils. The last verse indicates that the poem was a memory or flashback. The reader knows this from the first line of the verse, For oft, when on my couch I lie. The reader knows that the memory is frequently visited because oft means often. The next line creates an empty mood, far away, drifting and dreaming. The mood and atmosphere is quite strongly put forward to the reader with vacant or in pensive mood. This means absent and dreaming, inattentive and expressionless but with a thoughtful frame of mind. Verse four has a special meaning. It is a time in Wordsworths life when he is having a look back at his experiences, which is so emotionally overwhelming to him that it has created an extremely long lasting impression in his mind. Wordsworth sums up his feelings from the experience in the last verse they flash upon that inward eye; here he is saying that the vision of the crowd of daffodils is stuck in his imagination for the rest of his life. This brings great happiness to him, which is the bliss of solitude. By using the word bliss, Wordsworth expresses his emotion of complete happiness. Solitude, meaning being alone completely with no-one near you at all, tells the reader that this experience was very personal to him and special, and only he will ever know the wonder of it even if he describes is as best as he can to others and then my heart with pleasure fills. This is a personification as there is an image of a jug being filled to the brim with pure joy. Also there is another personification in the last verse, and dances with the daffodils. It is a further personification of a lively person who dances. In this last line Wordsworth is saying that his heart is dancing with the daffodils. Daffodils do not dance, but to Wordsworth they give off life, joy and radiant beauty. The last three lines of verse four create a pure and lovely mood. In The Daffodils Wordsworth is trying to teach the reader to appreciate the beauty of nature and to understand the importance of memory. I also think that he is trying to teach the reader about how the effect of just one experience in your life can be so strong and powerful that it can be remembered as vividly as it was the day of the experience many years later. But in the second verse the perfect image is shattered I am reading poetry to the insane this is a shock for the reader because it was totally unexpected. It is a very bold statement to put in to a poem. The reader finds out that the perfect country house is actually an insane asylum or a hospital. The verse carries on to describe the audience sitting down listening to the poem, A beautiful chestnut -haired boy although these people are mentally ill Clarke still tries to describe them as if they were normal people. Another shock is that the child she described so perfectly was actually, a schizophrenic on a good day. Gillian Clarke describes the hospital further by saying In a cage of first March sun this statement gives you the image of a prison not a hospital. But the bars of the cage are actually only the blinds on the window but it still gives you the idea that the patients are trapped inside the hospital. The poet then describes a woman not listening, not seeing, not feeling Clarke uses the techniques of tripling and repetition of the word not to describe the womans mental state. Gillian Clarke further explains that the woman was absent meaning that she wasnt really listening just sitting there. Gillian Clarke at the end of the third verse mentions, A big mild man is tenderly led to his chair. We have know idea what is wrong with him; all we know is that he is a big, mild man this shrouds the patient in mystery because we dont know what he is going to do or say. But immediately after the man has been led to his chair Clarke reveals to us he has never spoken whilst being a patient at the hospital. Although the man seems a tough guy the reader finds out that he actually isnt he rocks gently to the rhythms of the poems. Gillian Clarke depicts herself reading to their absences, presences she uses rhyme contrast to describe the patients she is reading to. In the last line she once more describes the silence man as she did in the previous verse big, dumb labouring man as he rocks. The verb and adjective labouring portrays an image of a strong but unintelligent man. To start off the fifth verse Clarke uses the technique of sibilance, tripling and alliteration to describe the mans movements suddenly standing, silently. These three words put together are called sibilants. The man had never really been noticed before until now. Although the man hasnt done anything Gillian Clarke is still afraid of him, she says huge and mild, but I feel afraid. The poet uses similes to describe the man breaking through his silence, like slow movement of spring water. In the last line of verse five the man starts to recite The Daffodils. Clarke describes the nurses are frozen silenced and shocked by the miracle before them that the man can actually speak. Clarke describes him as hoarse but word perfect this reinforces the fact that he hadnt spoken in a long time. As he recites the poem outside we find out that there are daffodils as still as wax which is another simile. The daffodils are also shocked by the man speaking because they are frozen as well. They are also his audience. Clarke describes the numbers of daffodils and how their syllables are unspoken. In the last but one verse we find out how the man knew the poem. 40 years ago in a valleys school although it is a short poem he still remembered it after 40 years. After starting to speak again h had remembered there was a music of speech but he did use to speak and that he once had something to say. She describes them as flame but the reader knows that they are actually clapping. Four Theoretical Approaches to Metaphysics Essay There are four theoretical approaches to the metaphysics and they include Dualism and the theory that what exists on can do so on two levels the physical or the mental. The next approach is Materialism which theorizes that everything exists on a physical level. Then there is the Idealism approach which states that everything that exists is mental or spiritual. Finally, there is Alternative Views which theorizes that what exists in neither mental nor spiritual but believed that what exists is both, which means that what exists is neutral. In the Materialism theory of metaphysics it is said that everything is made of some kind of structure that are now called atoms. These atoms are governed entirely by physical laws and are thought to make up everything that we know and see. There were and are still many men in the scientific community that feel this way, but the most pronounced one was named Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes implied â€Å"clearly that all things are made of material particles and that all change reduces to motion. † (cite) His theory states that everything is matter in motion to include an individual’s thought process. Hobbes goes into detail about how this process works and called it perception or sense. His way of describing it is the fact that things have different properties and that the properties do not really exist. The properties of an object are based on what we perceive them to be. The motion that is still on the inside is a perception and in turn is the root cause for thinking, imagination, and memory. As humans we describe this reaction by assigning words to these perceptions and Hobbes labeled that as reasoning. The hard drive is considered as the movement on the inside and the keyboard and mouse as the outside. This whole process is done through movement and if stationary there is nothing that can be done to retrieve or store information. First to store or retrieve information an external source of movement needs to happen. Movement from the outside was represented as a keyboard and mouse. The keyboard and mouse which is movement from the outside affects the hard drive which is the movement from the inside and vice versa. Now that movement has been represented the reasoning of information needs to be considered. Now we understand what movement effect movement means we can now address the fact of reasoning and perception. All of the information that the computer takes in needs to go somewhere and needs to be retrieved again. The computer makes sense of all the data by assigning numbers to all of the data so that it can be retrieved again. This aspect would be considered our perception which is reasoning which as Hobbes stated before is our thinking, memory, and imagination. Now some people would argue that Hobbes theory does not take into accounts decision making and other voluntary actions, but he does go into detail about how that process works. Hobbes addresses the finer points of the decision process by stating that every decision or movement starts of as an â€Å"endeavor† which was caused by perception. He then breaks it down even into two groups consisting of desire and aversion. When the endeavor is toward something then it is considered a desire and when it is away it is considered an aversion. We associate desire and aversion with words like love and hate or good and bad. So according to Hobbes the basic principle of our decision making is like a magnet. Let’s look at the magnet that is in the computer and affects the hard drive. Sometimes data can be corrupted and the information will not take to the hard drive. The process of corrupt data being entered from the outside can be considered as an aversion. Now any information that the system lets in can be considers as desire. If that did not make sense then lets look at a magnet in general. A magnet has a positive and a negative side. Anything that is attracted to the positive side can be considered a desire and anything that is repelled by the negative side can be considered an aversion. In the recent years there has been some advancements in technology that allows us to uncover the mysteries of the universe. Scientists have found matter that is smaller than atoms and they are calling them subatomic particles. It has been discovered that these particles make up every aspect of the universe and are comprised of some type of energy that is connected with everything else. After this discovery a lot of scientists are rattled about their theory and if Materialism is really the right type of metaphysical theory to go with. In 2001, Sub-Saharan Africa recorded the highest number of deaths from HIV/AIDS, with 29.4 million people living with AIDS; 10 million young people and 3 million children. Among these, 12.2 million were women and 10.1 million men. In 2002, 3.5 million new infections were reported. From this backdrop, Kenyans were interviewed on their perceptions of sex and condom use within heterosexual relationships revealing that denial and silence played a major role in the escalation of the pandemic while gender differences, culture and power were perceived as negatively impacting negotiation of sex and condom use within Kenyan communities. It was prospering because people were choosing not to talk about it. It was this realization that provoked me to go wider, beyond my personal circle, beyond the people I worked with. The quieter we keep it the more people it will affect and stigmatize, especially while people believe that AIDS affects some people and not others (Kaleeba 29). This article is based on semi structured interviews with four Kenyan men and women on how they perceive, and negotiate sex and condom use within heterosexual relationships. It focuses on gender, culture and power, and how these dynamics are projected, if at all, in participants’ negotiation of sexual relationships within the Kenyan community. The purpose of the study is to understand the relationship between gender, power and HIV/AIDS prevention. Recent statistics indicate that Botswana’s adult prevalence Sex, HIV/AIDS and Silence 45 rate for example, has peaked to 38.8 %, Lesotho 31%, Swaziland 33.4% and Zimbabwe 33.7%. In total, Africa experiences 6,000 AIDS related deaths per day and Kenya, 18 deaths per hour (UNAIDS 3). Researchers, educators and governments now suggest the need [for] culturally sensitive knowledge of sexual beliefs and practices as a way forward to understanding and evaluating patterns of HIV/AIDS transmission in different communities, in view of designing effective intervention programs (Lansky 3). The United States Constitution is a 7,000 word document which established a national government and created three branches of that government. The three branches established were the legislative branch being Congress, an executive branch being the President and finally a judicial branch which was the Supreme Court. The Constitution was created by the Founding Fathers of the United States who saw the previous system of government, the Articles of Confederation, as weak and leaderless. I will discuss what I consider the main motivations of the Founding Fathers in creating the Constitution and why they created certain branches of government as they did, as well as the reasons why they created the Constitution in this way. I will then proceed to write about what aspects of the Constitution are good for the Government and the people of the United States and what aspects of the constitution could be improved upon. Alexander Hamilton drafted a report which was supported by James Madison that proposed that the thirteen states send delegates to a convention to devise such further provisions as shall appear to them necessary to render the constitution of the federal government adequate to the exigencies of the Union. Congress invited the states to send delegates to a convention in Philadelphia for the sole and express purpose of revising the Articles of Confederation and to render the federal constitution adequate to the exigencies of government, and the preservation of the Union. Here were the beginnings of the Constitution, as the delegates quickly noticed problems with the original Articles of Confederation. The delegates were unhappy that there were laws which inflated the states currency and abolished debts. The absolution of these debts made the debtors influence s tate governments and push their minority interests onto the majority. The main problem with the Articles of Confederation, however, was that there was no executive or judiciary; therefore the states had no single person to look to in time of crisis or that rash decisions could be made, without the protection of rights. An example of this being in Pennsylvania where the Quakers lost the right to vote in elections due to a decision of the Pennsylvania legislature. The states were also seen as weak if they did not form a federal unity. This was described in the Federalist Papers, written by Publius which was actually a combination of works of Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, published in New York to make the case for the ratification of the new Constitution by the state conventions. In the papers they explain that if the states were acting separately they then could easily be picked on and taken over by European powers. Publius further maintains that if the states were fighting am ongst themselves, liberties would be at risk and they would be economically worse off. The states could also not protect themselves from internal revolutions without a national government to intervene, such as in the case of Shays rebellion in Massachusetts in 1786. A system of powerful government was consequently needed to put these issues to rest. As we have seen the Founding Fathers saw that the Articles of Confederation were not working and therefore needed a new form of government to take control. The Philadelphia convention was set up to deal with these issues. Various proposals were put forward including the Virginia plan which wanted a strong national government and the New Jersey Plan which wanted a weak national government, until they reached an agreement formally known as the Connecticut compromise. The First Article of the Constitution talks about the legislature. The larger states wanted representation based on population; the small states feared this would not give them a large enough voice within Congress to air their grievances. A compromise was reached that there would be two houses. These would be the House of Representatives which was based on population and the Senate which would have two representatives from each state no matter what the population of the state was. The small states were scared that the larger states would override them on decisions and therefore were worried that they would be in an insignificant position within the new form of government, so in demanding the Senate, they now saw they had an equal voice on legislation that they saw as unfair or did not like. The Founding Fathers saw that the legislature needed to be based on the representation of the people, as they saw that if the rulers right to rule depended on the approval of the people to be governed. The Founding Fathers also wanted the legislature to be responsive to the electorate. A direct election to the House of Representatives was seen as a good way for the people to have a voice. The fathers decided to have a representative on two year terms for every 40,000 people in the House of Representatives. They did not make the population smaller as it would become too divisive within the House and if the population was larger then it was assumed that the representative would lose his connection with the people he was meant to represent. The other part of Congress, the Senate, was split so that it would weaken the power of the legislature; the Senate was elected on a 6 year term and not elected directly but by the legislature of that state. This was so that quick reforms were not passed in the fever of the moment. As we have seen the Articles of Confederation were said to lack an executive to take decisive measures for the states as a whole. Article 2 sets out to address this problem. The executive was seen as a popularly elected monarch, however, one that could be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanours. This was enacted so that no one should be above justice. The Founding Fathers saw that the states needed someone to represent them abroad, so the President was given the power to make treaties, and oversee foreign relations. These were decisions which the Founding Fathers knew needed to be handled in a quick manner so they were handed to the President, as he was a single representative and could treat these matters with priority with little interference from other branches of government. The President had very little to do domestically, as it was decided that the legislature should handle these issues. He could veto legislation, and propose it, but domestically this was about as much as he could do. The Founding Fathers gave the President very little domestically as they were concerned that h e would destroy personal liberties as they perceived the monarch of Britain had done to the colonists. They also did not want him to be elected by rash decision making, so therefore the Founding Fathers decided on election by an electoral college. This was also to stop corruption within the system, as it was elected separately from the federal and state governments; it was subject to no influence from these institutions, thereby being completely independent. The Founding Fathers did this as they saw how easily influenced the executive could be by other parts of the government, as they believed in the British system. In the same manner the Founding Fathers also decided not to have members of Congress in executive positions, such as cabinet members. The Federalist states that this was to stop the executive undermining the legislature by lucrative appointments. They were motivated to keep the executive under control as they had seen how influential the monarch of Britain had been, and how his rash decisions immediately affected the colonists lives. By making the executive as weak as they had done, they hoped to undermine his power. Article 3 expresses the role of the Judiciary within the frame of the Constitution. The Supreme Court was said to interpret and defend the supreme law of the land which was the Constitution. Article 3 states that the Judicial power shall extend to all casesÃÆ' ¢Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚ ¦arising under this Constitution. The Supreme Court case of Marbury vs. Madison clarified the powers of the Court. It was held that Article 3 of the Constitution implies that the Supreme Court has the power of judicial review. It has been argued that this was intended by the Virginia Plan. The Founding Fathers also decided to elect the justices for life, although this caused concern for some but they were reassured by Madison who stated that they will have lack of access to either the sword or the purse He also claimed it would be the least dangerous branch since it could only interpret the Constitution and the people, if they felt strongly about the issue and could amend it as they saw fit. The Founding Fathers saw the Supreme Court as the ultimate protector of the Constitution and therefore saw it was needed not only to strike down legislation that conflicted with the Constitution but to protect the liberties of the people it was meant to protect. The separation of powers dispersed powers of the government into different areas making it difficult for one to control the other. This was provided for by the Founding Fathers so as to stop one system of government becoming tyrannical and effectively taking over the government. It forced Congress and the President to agree on policies, therefore stopping one or the other from becoming too powerful. The checks and balances were sai d to make every branch superior and inferior to one another. The separation of powers and checks and balances are one of the aspects which least impress me about the Constitution, although it has served well in some aspects which will be explained later. The reason is the checks and balances system can lead to gridlock if there is not agreement between the institutions of government. A good example of this was when President George W Bush wanted to expand the social security programme; he could not pass the legislation as Republicans were scared of losing their seats if they voted for it. The weakening of political party ties in government has made the gaining of support for the Presidential proposals hard. This means it can take years for reforms to be passed such as the case with healthcare, although some reforms were eventually passed recently. This means that the Supreme Court can have a long lasting bias as where a conservative President appoints conservative Supreme Court justices who are likely to follow their conservative bias in reaching decisions. Since the justices are life serving they can hamper decisions made by Congress or the states. This can be seen in such divisive issues such as slavery, abortion, gun control and even the election of the President in 2000. They can deem certain legislation unconstitutional which blocks progress within the United States even if the majority of citize ns want it. Another issue that least impresses me about the Constitution is the Electoral College. The Electoral College hampers the concept of one person one vote, as the form of the Electoral College cancels out all the other votes if the state is won by another party. It also creates problems in elections as candidates have to campaign to not obtain the most votes, but to capture the most states. For instance Al Gore did not want to alienate the states of Pennsylvania and Michigan so decided not to air his views on strong gun control. Another weakness is the power of amendment in the Constitution. This is the very opposite of democracy in my view as thirteen states that represent less than 5% of the population can block constitutional amendments. This is due to Article 5 of the Constitution which provides that amendments must be ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States, or by conventions in three-fourths thereof. The aspect of the Constitution which most impresses me is the fact that it is the worlds oldest surviving constitution and that it still provides a workable constitution in the context of the modern United States. What also impresses me is that it has a Bill of Rights which enshrines peoples rights and expresses that certain human rights are inalienable rights which cannot be taken away from them. The Constitution could be seen as a good precedent for other countries to follow but, however, this not seems to be the case.
